Phoenix Challenge: DAY 3

Back at it. Today I’m answering the question why I am interested to be a professional writer. Whilst writing this I was listening to Jamie Foxx’s singing Luther Vandross song, ‘If Only for One Night’ and simply put, I want to evoke the same emotions in others when they read and hear my words that I feel when I hear his voice. That feeling is magic — you’re playing God.

Even though most people probably would not admit this but being a writer, or in general an artist, is the occupation of someone who enjoys manipulating. And too avoid sounding Machiavellian, I will say that manipulation is something that will do consciously or unconsciously. But as artists, we choose a specific field to wield control.

Manipulation can be both good and bad but people tend to have a negative connotation with the word.

The reason why I would like to have a career as a writer is so that (as cringey as this may seem) one day I can speak to the seven year old me and tell her that ‘your voice matters and your words have healed people’.

It’s the most beautiful (well one of) feeling in the world when you know through your vocation within the arts, someone’s life had been made better.
